Determining lightness from an image
نویسنده
چکیده
A method lor the determination of lightness from image intensity is presented. For certain classes ot images, lightness corresponds to reflectance, while image intensity is the product of reflectance and illumination intensity. The method is two-dimensional and depends on the different spatial distribution of these two components of image intensity. Such a lightness-judging process is required for Land's retinex theory of color vision. A number of physical models are developed and computer simulation of the process is demonstrated. This work should be of interest to designers of image processing hardward, cognitive psychologists dealing with the human visual system and neurophysiologists concerned with the function of structures in the primate retina.

Layered image representations and the computation of surface lightness.
A fundamental goal of research in the perception of surfaces is to understand the nature of the computations and representations underlying lightness perception. A significant challenge posed to the visual system is recovering surface lightness from the multiple physical causes that contribute to image luminance. One view asserts that the visual system decomposes the image into estimates of ill...
متن کاملThe Role of Lightness Perception in Determining the Perceived Contrast of Real World Scenes
We investigate the impact of the background luminance upon the perceived image quality of real world scenes. To do so, we generate a set of small image patches that span the full range of mean luminance values and contrasts that may be displayed upon a monitor with a finite luminance range. Subjects viewed the images on a uniform black, grey or white surround and were asked to rate the perceive...
متن کاملImage lightness rescaling using sigmoidal contrast enhancement functions
In color gamut mapping of pictorial images, the lightness rendition of the mapped images plays a major role in the quality of the final image. For color gamut mapping tasks, where the goal is to produce a match to the original scene, it is important to maintain the perceived lightness contrast of the original image. Typical lightness remapping functions such as linear compression, soft compress...
متن کاملAssessing of Fabric Appearance Changes Using Image Processing Techniques
This paper describes the use of image processing to measure lightness changes of fabric appearance. The lightness changes due to dyeing, washing and exposure to light treatments are studied. These properties are measured by using the changes in the intensity levels of the fabrics image and the L* obtained by a spectrophotometer. For each case, analysis of variance (ANOVA) is carded out and the...
متن کاملAn Efficient Color Edge Detection Using the Mahalanobis Distance
The performance of edge detection often relies on its ability to correctly determine the dissimilarities of connected pixels. For grayscale images, the dissimilarity of two pixels is estimated by a scalar difference of their intensities and for color images, this is done by using the vector difference (color distance) of the three-color components. The Euclidean distance in the RGB color space ...
